Introduction
Freshman
year of college is an amazing time in a student’s life. You are learning
how to live away from home for the first time, adjusting to a change of
scenery, meeting so many new people and adjusting to the academic side of
college. All these changes are a big deal to students just as they were
for me. Being able to make it through these obstacles is part of the
reason why freshman year is such a great portion of a college student's
life. I would not have changed anything about my freshman year experience
here at URI. When I saw the applications for being a URI 101 mentor I saw
an opportunity to help freshman make the most of their first year experience at
URI.
This summer leading up to mentoring I did not really know what to expect. I was not sure if it would be too much work, what my students would be like, what working alongside professors would encompass, etc. Being a mentor is a daunting task, this group of students will be sitting there looking at you for answers. Many of these worries I had were quickly alleviated. I was able to get in touch with my partnering professors, Dr. Quilliam and Dr. Orr, and they were certainly there to guide me through this experience. As well as Kat Moniz my CSV instructor, I had plenty of resources to use throughout this semester. Then came meeting the class for the first time, I was very nervous. I could not however ask for a better group of freshman. They were very participative and attentive throughout the duration of this 101 experience. Getting to know all these wonderful people was another reason why this was such a special experience for me. I would like to thank all these people for their part in my mentor experience.
The
last part of the equation left the URI 101 setting is me the mentor. Here on my mentor website I have included my
learning contract and how I carried out these objectives. These objectives are examples of ways I
helped my students transition from their high school lives to life here at
URI. Which in the end was my original
goal in this mentoring experience; help these students have the best freshman
year experience they can possibly have.
I hope you enjoy the rest of my mentor website!
