Annotation Three
Topic: Campus Resources
Goal Statement: To show my students some of the places and resources here on campus I set up a scavenger hunt for them.
Activities / Resources: The students will have lists of ten places or things around campus. At the places they must take a picture and the others are items they must obtain. This will show them places that they may need to visit over their time here as well as URI traditions, such as taking a picture of the ram outside the union.
Evidence: I will have a copy of the list of things they must look for as well as some of their pictures.
With this activity I attached the scavenger hunt the students participated in as well as some samples of the pictures of the places around campus they had to find. These were many places that are very useful for new students to know about.
Over the course of orientation and first getting to campus as a freshman you are told about many places on campus and the resources these places hold. With hearing all this it is a little intimidating, I thought with my class I could make a scavenger hunt with general knowledge of campus as well as some specific to the college of pharmacy.
In this activity I made a list of clue that hinted toward various places around campus. These are many places the students have heard about through orientation but still may be a little unsure of as they are beginning here at URI. I know from experience it is much easier to find these places once you have been there. The students broke into groups and went on with the hunt. It was a good bonding experience for them as well because it was the first day of class and they were put in a situation to work together toward a common goal. After the students were done taking pictures all around campus we met on the quad so that we could go over the answers. Here I was able to explain to them what resources are held at each place they had just visited. Many of the students did not know where Green Hall was so it was helpful for them that now they know where to find enrollment services.
From this activity I learned how to plan an activity that could combine educational aspects with a fun moving around atmosphere. I also observed that the students become for comfortable being outside the classroom. URI 101 is a class that is not all about being in a room at desks it is an exploration of the campus and life here. I learned that this is very important to freshman especially when they feel uncomfortable in the beginning. Being able to explore campus was very beneficial to the students.
Here I have evidence in the form of the scavenger hunt clue list as well as some pictures of the students from various spots around campus. (If you scroll over the pictures it tells you the location!)
